Balaenoptera

Echoes In The Fog

2018 — St Lawrence River, Canada

The St. Lawrence River carries a rich history and a quiet refuge, sheltering its giants in deep, cold waters. The recurrent thick fog over this body of water acts as a shy curtain, slightly opening from time to time on the unpredictable: all in finesse, muffled, like a privileged view of an unknown state. As we slowly glide in the zodiac through the vapors, I once again sense the presence of a greater consciousness, enveloping everything with timidity, materializing itself through glances of the shy giants. The giants are there, slow-moving echoes: breath, spine, fin, and shadow; they are silence made visible. So close, almost within hand’s reach, their sour breath fills the air. Balaenoptera explores the tension between visibility and vanishing, power and stillness, presence and memory.
