Desert's Oracles

2018 — Wadi Rum, Jordania

Wadirum | Desert’s Oracles is a series of close-up camel portraits, made in the spirit of an old desert idea: that some animals arrive as signs. In the story of Ṣāliḥ’s camel, the animal is not a spectacle, but a test of respect, a living presence that reveals the truth of those who meet it. Up close, their faces become a jury of the desert. And those massive eyebrows and lashes, a kind of natural regalia, as if they were already prepared for a ceremony. Each one carries a distinct temperament. Curious, amused, suspicious, serene, very much like human nature. They appear as guardians of the desert, a slow-moving tribe of prophets, unaltered by time or season. They observe, they wait. And when they accept your presence, the exchange becomes quiet and direct, as if the desert itself is looking back at you through them. These portraits are oracles with no words, only gaze. A message without explanation, left behind in dust and light.
